JESS NEVINS’ “BLACK DOSSIER” ANNOTATIONS

“The passing cloud, the cooling breeze, the sudden storm that threatens to burst and finally does, the wind that stirs and suddenly blows with full force, the light that fades and is reborn are all things, elusive to the eyes of the uninitiated, that transfigure the color and shape of the bodies of water.” (Claude Monet)

The Musee de l’Orangerie sits in the jardins de Tuileries, not far from the Musee du Louvre in Paris. It contains over 140 works by French painters, produced between 1880 and 1930. A specially designed space was created in the Orangerie to house the 12 piece series The Water Lilies, painted by Claude Monet between 1918 and 1926, and gifted to France by Monet following the signing of the armistice. Monet’s own garden and ponds at Giverny provide the setting painted in these works.

Claude Monet is generally considered to be the most outstanding figure among Impressionists. Monet’s art is based on the use of color to draw the motive without resorting to line. Monet was using short brush strokes, which often looked rather like spots of paint, not lines. This was a completely new way of painting that became the mark of Impressionism. He also produced series of paintings depicting the same scene at various times of day. His intention was to portray the different atmosphere engendered by the light at different times of day. Born out of the artists’ desire to break

Born out of the artists’ desire to break away from the canons of the Academy, French Impressionist artists Manet, Monet, and Renoir explored contemporary subjects and scenes in new and experimental ways. Major contributions of the Impressionists include painting everyday life, they choice to paint en plein air, outdoors, instead of in the studio and most importantly, the fleeting effects of light on a particular subject. These “impressions” of light became the primary subject matter, especially for Monet. On the bridge between Realism and Impressionism is Edouard Manet. Born in Paris in 1832, he preferred a more classical approach to painting. However, his subject matter in paintings such as Le Dejeuner Sur L’herbe and Olympia gave him the reputation as a nonconformist. Manet places the Olympia we see in classical paintings in a contemporary setting rather than an allegorical one and she looks directly at the viewer. The refusal of the salon to show these paintings earned him the dubious title, “Father of Impressionism”. Claude Monet is best known for his paintings of his garden at Giverny. In the 1890’s he began to build a water garden around his house. There he painted his famous water lily paintings. By 1909 he had conceptualized an idea for a vast project of water lily canvases that would envelop an entire room. From 1916 almost until his death he worked on these canvases. He spoke of this endeavor, “In the night I am constantly haunted by what I am trying to realize. I rise broken with fatigue every morning.” In these canvases perspective is reduced to the water lilies floating on the surface of the water. Pierre Auguste Renoir’s painting, Le Moulin de la Galette is a study in impressionism. The scene is of working class people enjoying the leisure of a Sunday afternoon. The artist set up an easel right near the location and painted from life. Renoir was especially concerned with the play of light and shadow as they danced across the surface of an object. The fondness for impressionism exists today because these images capture forever the changing moments of time that we can all relate to in our contemporary world.

In 1874 Monet and his colleagues decided to appeal directly to the public by organizing their own exhibition. The press derisively labeled them “Impressionists” because their work seemed sketchy and unfinished (like a first impression) and because one of Monet’s paintings at the exhibition bore the title Impression: Sunrise (1872, Mus?e Marmottan, Paris). Monet’s compositions from this time were extremely loosely structured, and the colour was applied in strong, distinct strokes as if no reworking of the pigment had been attempted. This technique was calculated to suggest that the artist had indeed captured a spontaneous impression of nature. During the 1870s and 1880s Monet gradually refined this technique, and he made many trips to scenic areas of France, especially the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, to study the most brilliant effects of light and colour possible.>

Customer Review: Okay action drama
It was James Stewart himself who summed up this movie best .”They wanted a picture with Jimmy Stewart and we concocted one”Undeniably ,there hangs over the picture a sense of movie making by numbers -a bit of action,a bit of romance ,a bit of conflict and violence with everything exacerbated by a natural disaster towards the end of the picture . This is not to imply this is a bad movie -it is nothing of the sort being perfectly entertaining if predictable .It does come as a let down after the excellence of the Westerns that Stewart and director Anthony Mann made together around this time -The Far Country ,The Naked Spur,Winchester ‘73 .Bend of the River and The Man From Laramie. These went some way to redefining the whole genre .This is not as innovative but is rattling good entertainment all the same. Stewart plays an oil man named Steve Martin who with partner Johhny Gambi (Dan Duryea)want to drill for oil under the waters in the Gulf of Mexico .This does not sit well with the local shrimpers who fear the drilling will drive away the shrimp upon which they depend for their livelihood.Opposition is lead by Techo Bossier (Gilbert Roland )an ooposition manifested in violence ans some sexual tension as romance blossoms between Stewart and Joanne Dru ,a member of a shrimping family The movie was somewhat ahead of its time in its eco message and benefits from good location shooting in the Gulf of Mexico .Stewart brings intensity and conviction to hois role and you can always rely on such stalwarts as Duryea ,Jay C Flippen ,Roland and Henry Morgan for quality acting .The women ,Dru and Marcia henderson are less impactful I would have rated this a star higher but for the quality of the other work done by this star/director combination .As it is you have an enjoyable if unoriginal tale with good production values and lots of lively action
Customer Review: Offbeat Stewart/Mann
James Stewart and director Anthony Mann used to alternate their Western pictures with contemporary stories during the 1950’s and this is one of their efforts. It’s certainly one of the most unusual plots ever to make it to the American screen: about the development of offshore oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico after WW2. Stewart had his usual family of regulars around him, the best being Dan Duryea. Stewart gives a compelling portrayal of a man possessed by an industrial vision. Even his gorgeous romantic interest Joanne Dru is a minor distraction from his main love, his oil rig. Written by John Michael Hayes, who went on to write two of Stewart’s classics with Hitchcock: “Rear Window” and “The Man Who Knew Too Much.”

Customer Review: Not too bad
I don’t think it’s as bad as some reviewers claim. It’s certainly not as bad as Baby Newton. The zebras are not terribly annoying as I read in another review. My son (20 mos.) smiles at them and likes the part near the end when they dance. The dance music is upbeat and fun. If anything bad can be said, it’s kind of slow moving; but I guess what can one expect from nature scenes?

1883 Monet settled at Giverny where he created a magnificent garden. This garden was the inspiration for most of his later work and inspired the series Water Lilies and the Japanese Bridge (begun in 1899). As age and deteriorating eyesight descended upon the artist his works lost almost all sense of form and are now referred to as ‘Abstract Impressionism’. C?zanne once said that Monet was “only an eye, but my God, what an eye.” Monet died on December 5, nearly blind?he was known to have said that he “feared the dark more than death.”

Julie is a happy little girl who lives in Paris, but she wishes she could walk in a country garden. Julie is pleased when her mother decides to take her to visit the most wonderful garden in the world, owned by a great friend of the family. They arrive at their destination, and for this little girl it is like walking in a dreamy world where twisting plants grow as tall as trees. When Julie?s dog runs away, she asks the gardener to help find her pet, and soon she and the gardener are friends. But this amiable, bearded old man is a very unusual gardener, for not only does he cultivate his many plants, he also paints beautiful pictures of them. Julie has made a friend of the great impressionist painter, Claude Monet. Based on a true story about the daughter of another fine artist, Berthe Morisot, this charmingly illustrated picture book includes reproductions by author-illustrator Laurance Anholt of a famous waterlilies painting, which Monet completed in his garden at Giverny, a few miles from Paris.

Customer Review: Art Appreceation for children
Fine art apprecation was a lost thing among adults let alone children, encouraging an understanding of art at a young age will encorage intrest in art in children and their caregivers alike. Help kids enjoy art and culture while reading a fun story. With this book, (and the others in the series) they introduce kids to the famous artworks of great painters throughout history while encoraging a childs imagination to be creative and tell a story with each picture. This story is even better because it is based on factual people, even the little girl. She embarks on a journey with her mother to visit a friend..the little girl ends up chasing her runaway dog on the trip and finds herself in a most magnificent garden..only to find out that is the “friend” they were going to visit. This book is wonderful, historical, educational, and fun. It encourages children to think about paintings, and to form images and stories for each one, to think about “what would it be like to be inside that painting”.

After being brutally dumped by his knockout ex-girlfriend, Matt (Josh Hartnett, Pearl Harbor) is so torn up inside that he vows to give up sexual activity–including masturbation–for Lent. His friends and coworkers start betting on how soon he’ll crack. Their skepticism is given fuel when Matt meets Erica (Shannyn Sossamon, A Knight’s Tale) at a laundromat. They’re immediately smitten with each other, but Matt struggles to stay true to his vow, even though it threatens to founder his potential relationship with Erica. Based on this description, you might think that 40 Days and 40 Nights is religious educational video–however, the barrage of sex gags and frequent nudity would quickly dispel this notion. Almost nothing in this movie remotely resembles human behavior. Some movies are so deeply stupid that they’re depressing to watch; this is one of them. –Bret Fetzer

Customer Review: Should be retitled 39 Days and 39 Nights, right?
Because that’s how long it felt when I watched this. LOL! Oh, sure Hartnett is adorable and an excellent squinter, but the plot was just so STU-PID. I’m always up for a madcap farce, but it must be grounded in reality and teathered to a radiator in my backroom. Because, people, truth is what inspires humor, not a contrived plot full of “That would never happens” and “he must be confused about his sexualitys.” Right? Single handsome men do not refuse sex with beautiful women. I’m living proof of that. Sure, I’ve been with some late-nighters that I regretted the next day, but I’m proud of the body of work I’ve strung together — which was particularly hot in the early 90s after I let my hair grow long and would wear tighter pants than I was accustomed to.
Customer Review: if the tables were turned……
I find it very telling in this feminist society, that a rape scene involving female-on-male rape, is included in what is called a “comedy”! If the tables were turned and it was a male-on-female rape, no one would dare call it a “comedy”.

In 1870, to escape the Franco-Prussian war, Monet went to London and was joined there by Lucien Pissarro. Together the two went to the National Gallery and studied the works of Turner and Constable. Monet returned to Paris via Holland, and in 1872 he went back to LeHavre where he painted “An Impression, Sunrise“.

Tate Show’s Size Obscures Doig’s Brilliance: Martin Gayford

Customer Review: A Wasted Opportunity Mr. Robinson
James Robinson started out with a pretty good idea although I was hoping for a character based more on the comic book guy from “The Simpsons”. He had enough money to make a technically solid feature out of his material, and he did a fairly good job of casting (except for Cary Elwes). I won’t bother to summarize the plot but will just address what went wrong. And enough is wrong to render this thing genuinely terrible. It appears that Robinson was inspired to totally change his original ending late in the game, but was not inspired enough to rewrite the first half of his screenplay (very lazy). Which means there is a HUGE disconnection between the first and the second halves of the movie. This is not a good thing because in the first half Robinson provides film language elements (signs and syntax) that point in an entirely different direction from the way the film ends up going. The whole idea of film is to effectively tell a story; bottom line is that writers and directors who do this well are considered talented. As I was watching it I gave it more credit than it deserved. I was waiting for them to reveal that the mother and the robber had just set up the store-owners to teach them a lesson. After a point I had to abandon this idea and began to wonder if it was a parody without any humor. If that’s the idea then someone should explain to Robinson that to be successful a parody should be funny. There were some very good shots in this movie. Natasha Lyonne gave a particularly good performance even if it was a grown-up version of her “American Pie” character. So a lot of good work was totally wasted on something that doesn’t work on any level which is very sad. Then again, what do I know? I’m only a child.
Customer Review: Comic Book Fan Boys Run Amouk
There is an underlining message to COMIC BOOK VILLIANS. All involved in this film must either hate comic books and its industry or know a lot about it… or care about comic books to put out this “message” film. It can go either way. In the mid-to-late 90’s, the comic book industry and its subculture went on a collecting and memorabilia craze. People thought they were going to buy comic books as investments and be millionaires. That plan bottomed out and the industry nose-dived. COMIC BOOK VILLIANS indirectly is an outgrowth of what happened to the industry in the late 90’s. The film is a cross between PULP FICTION, A SIMPLE PLAN, and VERY BAD THINGS with a touch of ‘Kevin Smith’ thrown into the mix. Two rival comic book storeowners Ray and Norman (Donal Logue / Michael Rapaport respectively) in a small town find out a local avid collector has died. Then they figure that they can get his comic book collection and sell it for a windfall. Unfortunately, the guy lived at his Mom’s house (Eileen Brennan) where he kept his collection and she refuses to sell. So, the two rivals devise plans to woo her to get the collection. However, she stands her ground not to sell. They end up resorting to drastic measures to get the collection and it gets real ugly, and very, very, violent. The plot starts out innocently enough with the script and dialogue having “comic book-knowledge” banter and even mentions the SDComic Con Int. (The San Diego Comic Con International)etc. However, it suddenly takes a sharp left turn and it is jarring and unwatchable. None of the characters are likeable. The only positive aspect of the film is that one of the characters; a comic book aficionado (D.J. Qualls as Archie) realizes the futility of comic book collecting and comes out on top. Therefore, as stated, there is an underlining message of the film; and that it is telling comic book ‘fan-boys’ to “GET-A-LIFE!” and that there is a whole world out there to explore besides the world of comic books and its obsession with memorabilia and collections. The film is blatant in this message and if that is its main intent, it is a scathing dig on the whole culture of the comic book industry.

Bloomberg - Actually, getting lost is what you can do in all the best paintings, Rubens and Monet, too. It’s part of the charm of the medium. The more you look, the more you can just carrying on looking. With Doig’s work, I think that only happens when he has a Continue

In the late 1860’s Monet continued to study landscape painting working with Courbet at Trouville and working frequently with Renoir at Le Grenouillere. It was at Le Grenouillere, that the first pure Impressionist painting took form. It was a radical departure from academic standards.
